Trivia: I found cemetery stone with : Robert Jerry 1807-1891 and Hurosine, His Wife, 1806-1983. This has to be Norbert & Euphrosine Right behind this was another stone with : Emma Jerry April 10,1898 27yrs. **Info sisters had found : 1886 : Baptism of Marie Eulalie daughter of Philibert Jarry & Emma Robert, Sponsor ?? & Emma Jarry...this Sponsor has got to be her ..at age 15? The conflict though, is 'sisters' info also had Death info on "Norbert" as 1900..... The ages & dates and names are too close to be a coincidence... ....even if it is Hurosine & not Euphrosine.. Norbert Americanized = Robert...? I had been itching to find this St.Alphonsus cemetery in GF. Found it; I parked on a small dirt road/path in the middle of the cemetery, but near the road. Walked around for an hour, freezing. Found many Robillards and Supprenants & 1 Enos Bodin. Gave up, went back to my car, and 12 feet from my car door was the Jerry plot. Near the main road. ** 'Sisters' are MaryLou,Lorraine,Grace & Jeannine

Trivia: Received copy of Currie Chart from Jeannine, who received it from Grace. Jean Currie & her husband Richard , were putting together family info and sent a questionnaire to Mother around 1980. Sometime later Jean sent Mother a copy of this chart, which was just relocated. From my phone chat with Jean : The oldest link is "Unknown 1st name" Mahan & his wife Ellen "Unknown maiden name" Mahan (1790-1882), both born & living in Ireland. Their son James is the next link. James Mahan 1810-1873 & Margaret Brett 1824-1905, were married in Ireland around 1842. There they had three sons Bartholemew 1843, John 1846 and PETER 1850. They all moved to America about 1850-52, and settled in Watertown, NY. It is believed that there was land there owned by a Brett, so it may have been Margaret's relative that brought them there. *** Bart and John served in the Civil War. Records are in Watertown. (I found info in NYSLib 5/14/97.) *** James, Margaret & Bart are buried in the Mahan plot in Calvary Cemetary in Watertown. *** Brothers Ed and Richard 'took off', no trace of where or when. Bart's 1st wife, Meg Lynch, "lost her mind" and drowned herself, while Bart was at war. She is buried in the Lynch family plot ("Family problems, you know those Old Irish") *** Jean said that her grandfather Thomas, had a cleft-lip, and was 'rejected' by others in school, so he didn't get much formal education. He became a toolmaker by trade. *** There is a Will on record from Margaret Brett Mahan, 1905'ish. *** Jean remembers many of the Mahan family houses along Brenber Street in Watertown, from when they used to visit the families. She said that her husband found an Irish? newspaper clipping with info on Ellen's death w/dates(1790-1882). *** Jean said that her Grandparents, Thomas & Hanna Brown Mahan, spent their Honeymoon(1897-8'ish) with our Grand parents Peter & Mary Ryan Mahan in Rensselaer. *** (Jean's husband Richard died of a Heart Attack around 1986,and is also buried in the Mahan plot in Watertown.)

Donohue at St.Joseph's in Feb. 1864. 4. Initial funding for the Cathedral came from Irish immigrants in the Albany area.

Known as "The Manassa Mauler," Dempsey was a tremendous puncher famous for his exciting fights, many of which set financial and attendance records, and is generally regarded as the best boxer from the sport's beginnings until the Great Depression. Dempsey trained in front of 3,000 people a day at Uncle Tom Luther's on Saratoga Lake, with his buddy Teddy Hayes keeping an eye on the always erratic Manassa Mauler. The camp was visited from everyone from J. Paul Getty to Al Capone to Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks.

THE COMMUNITIES OF NEW YORK AND THE CIVIL WAR The Recruiting Areas of the New York Civil war Regiments, Compiled by C.E. Dornbusch from Phisterer's 'New York in the War of the Rebellion 1861-1865' Compiled by: Stephen Haas 334 Chapman St Newark, NJ 07106 1987 The New York Public Library 1962 ....The individual records of the soldiers, however, reported the city or town of enlistment, and from this file, Frederick Phisterer compiled the information presented in the third edition (1912) of his 'New York in the War of the Rebellion'. Phisterer commented that "it is impracticable, in fact impossible, to obtain any accurate figures of the number of men furnished during the war by each county, city, town and village". He was able to list, however, under each regimental summary, the places at which the respective companies "were recruited principally". The present compiler has tabulated this information as supplied by Phisterer, bringing together under each community of the State its contribution by company (ies) and regiments(s) to the forces raised by New York State for the Civil War. The arrangement of the tabulations is by county. Under a county, its cities, townships and villages are listed alphabetically and the 1860 population is given from the Federal census. Each community's contribution to the State's Batteris and Regiments is reported by arm of service: Art(illery), Cav(alry), Eng(ineers), Inf(antry) and MR (Mounted Rifles) in that order. Following the arm of service the numbers identify the Regiments, the letters the Companies. Company designations used the letters A through M, omitting J. A dash linking two company letters indicates that the intervening letters are included. (M) designates a National Guard Regiment. Went up, introduced myself, and sure enough, it was the Lyons family. Bill Lyons, well in his seventies?, and the others seemed to have no recollections of the Ryan family. Told them I was not sure where the relationship comes in, 'Cousin', but neither did they. Bill said "Is that Grace Mahan's family?". I left a few pages of our family info, and my phone number, and asked them to call if they think of anything. I went back to see Sister Andrea at St.Johns, to have her search for Marriage info for Mary Ryan & Peter Mahan. She called me the next day, 'searched from 1873 thru 1908 and found nothing.' Uncle Jack was born about 1885, so I had asked her to look a little before that year. Went to Rensselaer County Court House, told there that all Vital Statistics are at Troy City Hall. Merci, Ed Donohue, Albany NY ************************************ Bonjour, Glad to have been of help. As you keep on uncovering your French connection, you'll find that the names go on from less and less bizarre to more and more common. Veery few, if any, Euphrosine in the XVIth century ! But zillions of Madeleine, Marguerite, Anne and Catherine mated with Jean-Baptiste, Joseph, Pierre ou Charles. Easier to handle ? not necessarily: how do you deal with 4 Pierre Tremblay married to 4 Ursule Simard ? All from the same generation ? All from the same parish ? Who, following the custom of the time, will pass on their name to their children, then naming the others after their respective godfathers or godmothers. What if these godparents are also named Pierre, ursule, Joseph ou Madeleine ? No problem: you'll simply have two children in the same family, with the same name. No wonder, after a century or so there was a tidal wave of changes in the naming customs of French Canada and in came the Euphrosine, Sophronie, Anaclet, Exupere, Andronique, Epimage and the like ... It's these little things that make genealogy so challenging ... and such fun. Have a nice day . H‚lŠne Lamarche ******4/4/97 Ed, I've seen many Euphrosine's as a first name in Canada. As to that last name it is also spelled Baudin in the Tanguay. I check but did not find any Euphrosine Baudon but from about 1760 - 1800 listings are not as complete. If you find her parent's names let me know and I'll try to look them up for you. I also have some Jarrys in my family. I started my family "quest" because of my Great Aunt Dieudonnee. I figured it was very uncommon - turn's out it's a fairly common man's first name with one e. Irene

Trivia: March 4 97:Ed Although your Hacketts have no near connection to mine, being from Kerry and Roman Catholic, you are a very lucky person in that they put an exact record of their place in Ireland on a tombstone. Their births are too early for vital records. There is a book in many largish public and other libraries that identifies the thousands of townlands and other small places of the mid 19th century in Ireland. Also, visit your LDS family history center and check the IGI. Also, buy a paperbound book called TRACING YOUR IRISH ANCESTORS by John Grenham. And finally, when you have checked all this, contact the Kerry Heritage center--once you have as much information as you can collect in US. Addresses and numbers for all these places can be found through your public library, at the LDS centers, and on the web. Elizabeth Knowlton *********** Elizabeth, Bridget Hackett's grave stone says "In Memory of Bridgett Hackett, wife of Timothy Donohue, Born in Killmaney, Co.Kerry, Ireland, 1836, Died July 23, 1885" Her obit nor death, cemetary records mention more. Can't find Killmaney. I have Tim & Bridget in Albany NY at Baptism of their first, my grandfather in 1864...don't see them in city directories nor census till 1874. Ed Donohue **************Ed Today I checked the Irish Townlands book, DA979.G46 1984 and studied a long list of names close to Killmaney, Co. Kerry. Kilmaniheen, Kilmeany, Kilmoyly, Kilmulhane, Kilmurry. Based on how my grandmother pronounced ea and ee sounds when she did her Irish brogue, I suggest it is Kilmeany (pronounced KilMANy with a long a) in the Iraghticonnor Barony, Knockanure Parish, Listowel Poor Law Union, Ordinance Survey map sheets 11, 17. HOWEVER, you probably already know that very few Irish records survive and that there are far more US records to use on immigrants. Every single book on Irish research begins by saying that. That is wonderful that you have such good cemetery records to check. Many tombstones do not give so much detail. Did you find an obituary and a death certificate? The 1870 NY census is indexed now and should be checked. And the 1880 also. Have you begun with 1920 for that branch of the family and worked your way back? Every census offers new things, and sometimes the presence of someone in the family or living next door gives you extra clues. When did Timothy die because some of the later censuses give year of immigration. TO EVERYONE DOING ANY US RESEARCH ************** Elizabeth Looking at Grenham's book, page xxii, Map of Kerry Parishes. Would the above reference you gave, refer to # 32, Listowel Parish? I notice the parish Next to this is # 4, Ballydonohoe....certainly sounds like some kind of connection. Thanks, Ed Donohue Albany NY......PS..May I ask where you are located? *****************

Trivia: Cindy, Having seen your much revered name on many threads, I dare not let you go without asking more. (I have so many 'holes' in my search across the water, I don't know where to start) I'll stick with Donohue & Hackett. Grave stone says "In Memory of Bridget Hackett, wife of Timothy Donohue, born in KILLMANEY, Co.Kerry, Ireland 1836." From this spelling Elizabeth Knowlton sent me the following : <<< Based on how my grandmother pronounced ea and ee sounds when she did her Irish brogue, I suggest it is Kilmeany (pronounced KilMANy with a long a) in the Iraghticonnor Barony, Knockanure Parish, Listowel Poor Law Union, Ordinance Survey map sheets 11, 17.>>> I THEN ASKED : Looking at Grenham's book, page xxii, Map of Kerry Parishes. Would the above reference you gave, refer to # 32, Listowel Parish? I notice the parish Next to this is # 4, BallyDONOHOE ....certainly sounds like some kind of connection. THE ONLY "OLD" MAP I HAVE AT THIS TIME IS IN GRENHAM'S BOOK....AM LOOKING FOR OTHERS. DOES KILMEANY SOUND LIKE THE LOGICAL CHOICE TO YOU ALSO? Thanks, Ed Donohue Albany NY (Donohue,Hackett,Mahan,Ryan,Brett) *************************** Ed: I can't say that BallyDonohoe would be a clue, or simply a coincidence. It does mean "the town of the Donohues" however, so I would tend to think at one time, way back in the 1600 or 1700's, someone seemed to think enough Donohoes were there to name a townland after them. Ballydonohoe is in the Galey civil parish, which happens to be, as you note, the parish right next to Listowel civil parish, which happens to be right next to Knockanure civil parish. The entire area looks to be about 10 miles wide, maybe 5 miles north to south, so not a big area. Ordnance survey maps are the best source, generally the ones done at 6 inches to the mile are the best for showing all the townlands. As for Killmaney. Elizabeth is certainly correct, ea is pronounced with the long a sound, like in mane, wane, train, etc. Kilmeany is one of the larger townlands in the civil parish, taking up about 900 acres of a 9500 acre parish (as opposed to my little Saltpans, which takes up 170 acres of a 52,000 acre parish). So, yes I would say Kilmeany is dead on and that is where you belong. Cindy Woods

I told him I was chasing info on the Ryan's. He told me that His Grandmother was a Ryan from Rensselaer......Yikes! MAYBE a lead to more info. He seemed to know much about the Lyons family also. He will contact a cousin in Renss...Guyer?, to get more info. He also said grandma lived on Broadway, the next block down from the Mahan's 944.

Trivia: The Albany Donohue's Ireland Connection : 1780'ish (James?) Mahan our Great-Great Grand Father born in Ireland (Co.Leitrim?) 1790 Ellen (???)- Mahan, Great-Great Grand Mother born in Ireland (Co.Leitrim?)d1882 in Watertown,NY 1810 James Mahan, Great Grand Father born in Ireland (Co.Leitrim?)d1873 1815-25 Margaret Brett, Great Grand Mother born in Ireland (Co.Leitrim?)d1905 (On Internet :Found an Ellen Mahan in 1856 in County Leitrim,Outerragh civil parish, Tullywana townland. There is also a Michael and a William Mahan in that same townland.) Ellen & (James?)'s son James & wife Margaret & their 3 sons Bart, John and ggf Peter came to the USA in 1850-52. Ellen was said to be born in 1790, died in 1882. She came to Watertown around 1860-70's died 11/22/1882 in Watertown,NY. 1836 Timothy Donohue born in Ireland - (died 2/28/1894) 1837 Bridget Hackett born in Ireland - (died 7/23/1885) One or both were born in Ireland, Kilmeany, County Kerry. From Internet Info : "Based on how my grandmother pronounced ea and ee sounds when she did her Irish brogue, I suggest Killmaney(on the tombstone) is actually Kilmeany in the IraghtiConnor Barony, Knockanure Parish, Listowel Poor Law Union, Ordinance Survey map sheets 11, 17." This is near Trallee, south shore of the Shannon in Co.Kerry. I then asked : Looking at Grenham's book, page xxii, Map of Kerry Parishes. Listowel Parish,#32, is the parish next to # 4, BallyDONOHOE ....certainly sounds like some kind of connection. As for Killmaney. Elizabeth is certainly correct, ?ea' is pronounced with the long a sound, like in mane, wane, train, etc. Kilmeany is one of the larger townlands in the civil parish, taking up about 900 acres of a 9500 acre parish. So, yes I would say Kilmeany is dead on and that is where you belong...." Cindy Woods(Cindy is a major Irish genealogist Internet) Believe Timothy & Bridget came to Albany/USA separately between 1850 to 1861. 1842'ish James Mahan & Margaret Brett Wed in Ireland. They Begot Bartholemew(1843),John(?48), Peter(1850) in Ireland and MaryAnn(1852), James,Mary A.,Ellen C.,Edward,Margaret,Thomas,Richard,Agnes(?65) 1850 Peter Mahan our Grand Father is born in Ireland. (3rd son of James & Margaret(Brett) 1850-52 Mahans come to USA. (4th child, Mary Ann, born in Watertown,NY, 1852) 1850-61 Believe Timothy & Bridget came to Albany/USA separately. Bridget's brothers Michael & Daniel Hackett also came around this time. Hackett's settled at and around # 35 Elizabeth Street, South-East of Lincoln Park, off Morton. Many Donohue's there also, but Tim is first found at 28 Monroe St, behind McGary's, one block East of Clinton Ave, and a block from Orange St....all family locations.
